Mars appears to move backward across the sky, but it never actually reverses. Earth, moving faster on its inner orbit, overtakes Mars and changes our line of sight. The effect repeats roughly every 780 days: 1/S = |1/Pₑ − 1/Pₘ| where Earth’s period is about 365 days and
