Paul Desmond wanted his horn to sound “like a dry martini.” Here he uses the lightest tonguing and a smooth subtone. The sound isn’t bright or harsh the way a lot of bebop playing was. It’s unhurried, airy, and almost casually elegant. 5/4 is an awkward meter to improvise in.
